DayZ is an open-world survival game set in a post-apocalyptic landscape. Players must scavenge for food, water, and supplies while managing health, hunger, and hydration. The game features realistic survival mechanics, requiring attention to injuries, diseases, and environmental hazards.
The dynamic world of DayZ includes diverse environments, a day-night cycle, and weather systems that impact gameplay. Chernarus is the original map, spanning 225 km² with many notable locations to explore. Livonia measures 163 km², and its dense forests make navigation and survival harder. Sakhal, added in October 2024, is around 105 km² and players need the Frostline DLC to join a Sakhal server. Player interactions are intense and unpredictable, with room for both cooperation and conflict, and the persistent world means your actions have lasting consequences that reward planning and base building.

Without Host Havoc
The manual way: self-hosting
DayZ has a free dedicated server tool (Steam App ID 223350), but it runs only on an always-on Windows or Linux box, and the install needs a Steam account that owns DayZ. The server is CPU-bound and needs no GPU; budget a modern multi-core CPU and 4 to 8 GB RAM, more with mods.
- Install SteamCMD, then download the server:
app_update 223350 validate - Launch once to generate serverDZ.cfg, then edit the key fields: hostname, password, map template (Chernarus or another), and maxPlayers.
- Forward port 2302/UDP (plus the Steam query ports) on your router or firewall.
- Add mods from the Steam Workshop and list them in your startup line.
- Keep the box running, and re-run the update after every DayZ patch.
You own the patching, world-save backups, crash restarts, and DDoS exposure for as long as the server is up.
