How to Set Up a 7 Days to Die Dedicated Server
With Host Havoc
The easy way: with Host Havoc
- Pick a plan and region. 8 to 64 slots, in the datacenter closest to your group.
- Deploy in minutes. Your server launches on the current stable build, ready to join.
- Manage from the panel. Set the world, password, and player cap in a few clicks, and install mods like Darkness Falls without touching
serverconfig.xml.
Automated world backups, DDoS protection, and 24/7 support are included.
Without Host Havoc
The manual way: self-hosting
7 Days to Die ships a free headless dedicated server (Steam App ID 294420) that needs only the Visual C++ 2022 redistributables on Windows. It leans on both CPU clock and RAM: the world lives in memory and blood-moon hordes are CPU-bound, so plan for a fast quad-core (3.2GHz+) and 8 to 16 GB of RAM, more for modpacks like Darkness Falls. No GPU needed, on a Windows or Linux box that stays on 24/7.
- Install SteamCMD, then download the server with the anonymous login:
steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 294420 validate +quit - Edit
serverconfig.xml. SetServerName,ServerPassword,ServerPort(default26900),ServerMaxPlayerCount, and the world (GameWorld/WorldGenSeed). - Forward the ports. TCP/UDP
26900plus UDP26901-26903on your router and firewall. - Add mods by hand. Drop modlets into the
Modsfolder on the server (and on each client), since there is no in-game installer. - Keep it running as a service on Windows, or in screen/tmux on Linux.
After that it is on you: patching on every update (and matching the stable or experimental branch your players run), scheduling world-save backups, restarting after crashes, and absorbing DDoS yourself.
